It
cannot be denied that mastering a foreign language such as English is very important.
In fact, English is widely used as a means of
communication in the world. Since many scientific books are written in English,
it is important to learn this language to improve our knowledge. Regarding the important of English, in Indonesia, it has been taught at the formal school. The government of Indonesia has put English as a compulsory subject for the students
from elementary school until university level.
In
the English teaching learning, reading is the one important way to improve
students’ general language skills. In reading English texts the students should
understand what they have read. In other words, understanding what has been
read is reading skill. It means that, after students read the texts, students
can understand the whole meaning that appear from the texts. Without reading the students would not be able to acquire knowledge that is
fundamental in students’ intellectual growth. Reading skills is an enable
readers to turn writing into meaning and achieve the goals of independence,comprehension,
and fluency.
So many students are visual learners.
Students love reading picture series, and there is a reason for that. As students get older, teacher tends to teach
skills using isolated passages but taking a look at it visually with no text is
invaluable to some students who need to learn a different way. It is easy differentiation.
Using pictures series almost always requires students to generate their own
ideas rather than answer a multiple choice question or put a sequence of events
in order. The options are limitless with
pictures series that can have students do a most basic task within the skill or
can get highly complex, involving inferences, predictions, schema, etc.
The
most of the students feel bored with the method that applied lately. And
finally they assume that the teaching of reading is not so important to be
taught. Fact has been proved that the teaching of reading is filled with theory
only and practice rarely use. Actually, here is a way that is easy to apply in
the classroom and unfortunately still rarely used in this way. Students’ belief
that using picture series they will be more active and able to listen and
respond to the content of the story fully read. Picture series is a fun way of
teaching reading because this can make students feel comfortable and understand
the meaning of the story. Not only that, picture series also help students
follow the story line well and arranged as in the story has been supplied image
contextual story. The students are believed to used the picture series will
help them to hone their reading skills and increase their interesting.
